Scrambled – A Scrap Block Tutorial

Scrambled-Button

This block is so versatile and you can do many different designs by placing the blocks in a variety of ways. I’m looking forward to seeing how you use your scraps in this block!

(Follow this link to see my finished quilt using this block. I used orange scraps and called the quilt Orange Crush! )

Finished size: 12″x 12″  The large block is made up of four 6″ (finished) quadrants. These quadrants could be used on their own if a 12″ block is not desired.

Materials Needed (For one 6″ quadrant)

  • (1) 3-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangle
  • (1) 3-1/2″ square
  • (1) 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ rectangle
  • (2) 2-1/2″ squares
  • (2) 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ rectangles

(Accuquilt makes a 2-1/2″ square die that can cut up to 54 pieces at one time, and a 3-1/2″ square die that can cut up to 12 pieces at one time. )

Step One                                                                                                                                     Sew a 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ rectangle to a 2-1/2″ square. Make two. Press seams to the darkest fabric.

Step-1

Step Two                                                                                                                                     Sew the 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ rectangle to the long side of one of the units made in Step One. Press seam to the rectangle.

Step-2

Step Three                                                                                                                                  Sew the 3-1/2″ square to the rectangle side of the unit made in Step Two. Press seam to darkest fabric.

Step-3

Step Four                                                                                                                                   Sew the 3-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangle to the second unit made in Step One. Press seam to the rectangle.

Step-4

Step Five                                                                                                                                       Sew the two sections together to make the 6-1/2″ quadrant. Trim & square if necessary.

Step-5

If making a large block, lay out four quadrants in a design you like. Because this is a scrappy block, you can place the four sections in any way that looks good to you.

Step-6

Sew the top two sections together, and the bottom two sections together. Then sew the top and bottom rows together to make the large block.

Step-7

Ta-da! Now you’re ready to move on to the next block! Have fun busting those scraps. :)

A great Tutorial for making this block with scraps.
