Modern Pinwheel Block

Modern Pinwheel Block TutorialThis block is fun to make and uses flying geese to create a funky, modern pinwheel. The directions are for a block that finishes at 8″.

You will need:

  • 1 – 5-1/4″ square Color A (I used Navy Blue)
  • 4 – 2-7/8″ squares Color B (I used Red)
  • 4 – 2-1/2″x4-1/2″ rectangles Background color (I used white)

Fabric Requirement Pinwheel block

Step 1: Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each 2-7/8″ (red) square.

Step 2: Place two marked squares on the large (blue) square, right sides together and pin in place.

Step 3: Sew a scant quarter inch seam on each side of the line.

Step 5: Now place a small (red) square on top of each unit, right sides together, with the drawn line running top to bottom. Pin in place.

Step 6: Sew a scant quarter inch seam on each side of the drawn line. Do this on both units.

Step 7: Cut on the line and press seams toward red triangle.

Step 8: You now have four flying geese units! Trim the dog ears off each piece. Each unit should measure 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″.

Step 9: Place one flying geese unit on top of a background rectangle, right sides together. Sew together using a scant 1/4″ seam. Do this for all four units. TIP: When sewing these together, it is easier to keep your points if you sew with the flying geese piece on top because you can see where your point is.

Press seams toward the background piece.

Your units should now look like this:

Step 10: To assemble the block lay out the block pieces as shown. See the pinwheel we are going to get? You will sew the top two sections together and the bottom two sections together.

When putting the two pieces together, you will want to be sure to line up the corner of each geese unit, nesting the seams so there is no gap. (See how the red pieces lay right next to each other in the picture below?) This will give you a perfectly aligned center for your pinwheel.

Press seams open.

Step 11: Now sew the top and bottom rows together. Be sure to line up the center seam so the center of your pinwheel is crisp. Press the seam open and square block to 8-1/2″ if necessary.

  2. I tend to be anti-pinwheel (I don’t know … they’re just not me!). But I really like this design. It would be fun to play with color and value in this context. Well done!
