Checker 10″ Quilt Block

 

Social Media ButtonI used this block in my Checkered Past quilt and call it a Checker block. There’s probably an ‘official’ name for it in quilt world; this is just what I call it.

The block is good to use on its own, with scraps for a scrappy look, or mixed with other blocks in a quilt design. The Checker block finishes at 10″.

Materials Needed:

  • 9 – 2-1/2″ print/color squares
  • 4 – 2-1/2″ background squares
  • 4 – 2-1/2″ x 6-1/2″ background strips

First, make the nine patch center. Sew five of the 2-1/2″ print/color squares and the four 2-1/2″ background squares together in three rows as shown in the diagram below:

Sew the three rows together into a nine patch.

Add one of the 2-1/2″ x 6-1/2″ background strips to each side of the nine patch block. Press seams toward the background strips.

Sew one print/color 2-1/2″ square to each end of the remaining two background strips. Press seams toward the center strip. You will have two strips that look like this:

Step 4 Checker block tutorialSew these strips to the top and bottom of the nine patch block row. Press seams open.

Step 5 Checker block tutorialSquare block to 10-1/2″.
