Surprise Finish

Earlier in the week I thought the purpose of this post would be to share my progress on Anthony’s quilt.

This is probably the only time I’m glad I am wrong. 🙂

Instead of a progress report I have a finish to share! Yes – Anthony’s quilt is finished and I’m so pleased. I will be traveling to see him next week and now I’ll be able to give his quilt to him. Yay!!

(Sorry for the indoor pics – it’s pouring the rain today and snow is coming later…)

HST Quilt - tranquility

The pattern is simple, lots of half square triangles, but the ombré effect of the solids is what makes this so beautiful. This quilt invokes a sense of calm in me and I hope it does the same for Anthony.

Pieced backing - HST - Tranquility Quilt

I used leftover squares in the back, and pieced four coordinating colors to complete the back. Making quilt backs is almost my least favorite part of the quilt making process. I love the look of pieced backs but I have to force myself to make them.

HST - Quilt Detail

Anthony loves quilts that are soft and squishy so I kept the quilting to a minimum. Just straight (ish) diagonal lines. It only took me three hours to quilt. That made me very happy!

After Washing

There were fabric strips leftover, so I decided to make a pillow too. So easy – just sew those strips together, quilt some straight lines, and make an envelope back.

Scrap Pillow

This finish allows me to check another item off my goal list for the first quarter finish along. I’m pleased with my progress and I think it’s time to start making plans for the second quarter!

About Beth

I'm a wife, mother of two, and lover of all things crafty. I love to cook up new things in the kitchen and in my craft room, and sometimes get "licking the spoon" mixed up with "licking the fabric"!!

If Anthony doesn’t love it, send it to me……

That’s super! I love the quilt and the pillow, too, and I don’t see how Anthony could help loving it, too! Congratulations on a finish!

  4. Congrats on the finish! I really love the pieced back, it goes so well with the front. I also like the extra cushion cover you were able to make, looks like you had a productive week! 🙂

Awesome! I love quilts with the ombré effect, and he’s so lucky to get a pillow too. Congrats on the unexpected finish.

  6. I’m with you on pieced backings!! Backings are also so obnoxious to iron. In my dream quilting space, I have a table sized ironing board with a cordless iron 😉

Anthony will for sure live this! So sew nice! The quilting in this looks marvelous! Simple and neat! Your colors are calming and makes me want to sleep on the beach! Good job Beth!

  8. Beth this quilt is so stunning! The ombré effect is spot on. I know what you mean about backings; I have been succumbing to purchasing broadcloth for the backing recently and it has been making me very happy to do so! I am excited for you to visit and deliver the quilt in person. With all the snow you have been having, I am thinking it will be put to immediate and grateful use. 🙂

  9. I too dislike piecing the backs of quilts, though I generally struggle with matching an all one fabric type of back. I love your much more creative approach. And I love the simplicity of the diagonal quilting. SInce I just bought a sit-down HQ sweet 16 I feel obligated to quilt patterns that are difficult to do on a domestic. But I do not need to be complicated. Your design choice for the quilting is stunning. I need to give myself permission to follow a similar path.

Looks fantastic! I agree about making backing. By the time I finish piecing the last thing I feel like doing is pulling fabrci out again and piecing a back. Your efforts were worth it though! Nice bonus piilow.

Great quilt. And back. I too love pieced backs and hate making them. You did well matching all those triangle blocks. My 1/4 seams don’t allow such precise matching yet. Nice color gradation too.
